5 Things... A Summary of a Summer

So, before I left for camp, I told myself that I would be a very diligent blogger over the summer. Ha. Ha. That was before I knew the camp schedule and the very limited amount of time I would get to spend on the staff computers. So, here I am, over halfway through the summer, posting only for the 3rd time. (Sorry to all my loyal readers, I know there are oh SO many of you!)

Since I can't begin to summarize everything that has happened in the past month, I will make a list. I like lists because they are simple, concise, and usually convey most of what I want to say. So here goes, in no particular order... the Top 5 Things I Have Learned About Life This Summer (So Far!)

1. I really need to become a morning person. Most nights, I dream of getting up at 6AM and having an hour to myself, and it would be an incredibly productive hour! However, this has only happened about  4 times. And those 4 times have consisted of little to no productivity since I thoroughly loathe any time before 9AM.

2. I will never be able to eat real "camp food" again. Winshape sets the standard pretty high. It's like the Wolfgang Puck of camp food. We eat chicken pitas, stromboli, turkey and mashed potatoes, and even some Chick-fil-A. Plus, there are IceDream machines. Nothing beats IceDream.

3. God is not limited to my tiny understanding of His Power. He is not limited to my small prayers, and he is not limited by my attempt to control every situation or conversation. He works through and in spite of my weaknesses. He is never finished refining me and loving me through the fire. His power is made perfect in my weakness. For real.

4. 6th and 7th grade girls say some of the weirdest, funniest, and most awkward things. One of my campers wanted to shave her legs in her bed. (Gross!)  Another asked if I was married, and yet another asked if I was 16. (This is pretty common. They either guess that I'm an adolescent or a mother. No in between.)

5. My identity truly is found in Christ. The Lord really is teaching me all about surrender and where to find my worth. Devotion. Trust. Humility. Those have been key words.

I'll leave you with some lyrics to one of my favorite songs from the summer, Forever Reign by Hillsong.

"You are good, You are good

When there's nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin
You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You're the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life,
In You death has lost it's sting"

250 campers, 2 weeks

This past Sunday (called Spectacular Starting Sunday in the Winshape nation), over 250 campers arrived on the campus of Berry College to begin their 2-week stay at Girl's Camp. I have the privilege of having 5 of the 7th and 8th grade Cheyenne tribe members living with me for 2 weeks (in not so "camp-like" cabins... we have air-conditioning and bathrooms. Praise the Lord!) So far, it's been a blessing and a challenge, an adventure and a place of comfort. I have noticed that I am TOTALLY myself around my campers, which could tell you something about my personality. :)

My prayer for these girls is that the Lord will speak truth into their lives in a new way over these two weeks. These girls are dealing with so many different things, and they are hearing so many different voices telling them how to live. I hope that something they hear over these 2 weeks will lead them to listening to the only voice that matters, that of Jesus Christ. Our 3AM statement (so named because we want campers to be able to recite it even if someone woke them up at 3 in the morning) for the past few days has been, "I am something because Christ became nothing." I hope that truth is speaking to the girls' hearts as much as it has been speaking to mine.

I'm learning that 2 weeks is an incredibly long, yet short, period of time. It's a time period that allows for getting to know someone pretty well, but it's so short in the actual span of life. I hope to make the most of every opportunity!

Miss you all!

Change has been a pretty big theme in my life lately, (isn't it always?) and in about 4.5 hours, I will be "waking up," and headed to the airport to embark upon another "change" as I begin staff training for Winshape Camps. (Check 'em out!) This will be my second summer with Winshape, and I am SO pumped for 7th and 8th grade girls, crazy costumes, ridiculous songs, and wacky traditions.

But, I'm also a little (Ok, A LOT!) bummed to be leaving...

Sisters! (And the rest of the fam.)

Friends.

And more wonderful friends!

Good ol' Indiana,

Not to mention how much I already miss this group!
Even in the midst of packing, good-byes, and change, it is comforting for me to remember that my God is faithful. He does not change. "His mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness is great." (Lamentations 3:23)

Good-bye Indy, Hello GA!
